From 2009 til the middle of 2011 Jon and I kept returning to Maui to spend a few months at a time. We instantly fell in love with the island, the community and the ocean, which is so different than our California side of the Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, when it came time for me to get on a plane in 2011 and head back to the mainland, I couldn’t. This began a 5 year stay that was so rich and lush with beauty, friendship and joy, I still can’t wrap my head around how grateful we are for having had that time there.
While we traveled for various amounts of time, we kept our home in Maui, trying to rent it out to others who were able to stay for long periods at a time. After a while this proved difficult and it just didn’t make sense anymore to have an empty house sitting there waiting for us to return after 4-7 months absences while we traveled the globe.
In 2016 we finally went ‘full time nomad’ and moved all of our things out of Maui and back into storage on the mainland. It was a hard decision, but one that works for our lives right now. That said, the love affair with Maui continues. These photo journals chronicle just a small glimpse of our lives there throughout the years.
